How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session
Bringing a baby home is one of the most meaningful seasons of life — and your newborn session should reflect just that. As a Pittsburgh newborn photographer, my goal is to create images that feel natural, timeless, and full of love.
I’ve put together this guide to help you feel confident going into your newborn session. From how to clothe your baby, to preparing your home, to what to expect during the session — this post will walk you through it all.
What to Expect During a Newborn Session
Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours, which gives us plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, and soothing breaks. We’ll begin with family portraits and sibling interactions before moving into baby-only portraits and sweet little detail shots (those tiny fingers, toes, and wisps of hair).
Every baby is different, and that’s the beauty of it. I’ll gently guide you through the process but also follow your baby’s cues. The goal is never perfection — it’s connection.
How to Prepare Your Baby
Feed Baby Before the Session
A full belly makes for a happy, sleepy baby. Try to feed your little one right before I arrive. If bottle-feeding, prepare an extra bottle; if nursing, don’t stress about timing — we’ll pause as often as needed.
Keep Baby Comfortable
Loosen diaper and clothing about 15 minutes before your session to avoid marks on their skin.
A warm house helps! Slightly raise the thermostat so baby stays cozy, especially if we’re photographing them swaddled or with minimal clothing.
Have a pacifier handy (even if baby doesn’t typically use one). It often helps soothe during transitions.
What Baby Should Wear
Keep it simple: a white onesie, neutral swaddle, or soft blanket. Avoid bright patterns, logos, or stiff outfits. I’ll bring a few wraps and baskets, but you’re welcome to set out any heirlooms, special hats, or bows you’d like included.
Preparing Your Home and Family
Setting Up Your Home
Don’t stress about cleaning every corner! I’ll focus on the nursery, master bedroom, or living room — wherever the light is best. Open blinds and curtains, and switch off overhead lights for soft, natural light.
What Parents Should Wear
Neutral, light tones photograph beautifully — think cream, blush, tan, muted blue, or sage. Flowing dresses for moms and simple button-ups or henleys for dads are always a great choice. Barefoot or neutral socks work best for at-home sessions.
Including Siblings
Siblings bring so much love (and sometimes fun chaos!) to newborn sessions. Prepare them ahead of time by letting them know this will be playful and relaxed. Outfits in simple, neutral colors are best. Whether they’re kissing baby’s head, holding their hand, or simply lying nearby — these little interactions make for the sweetest images.
After Your Session
Once your session is complete, you’ll receive your gallery within 2–4 weeks. Your images will be delivered in a beautiful online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints, so you can preserve these fleeting newborn days in a tangible way that becomes part of your family’s story.
Your newborn session isn’t about being picture-perfect — it’s about capturing the love, connection, and tenderness of this season. Years from now, these are the images that will remind you how tiny they once were, and how deeply you loved them from the start.
